The road that made this circuit possible was cut by hand. Between 1959 and 1965, roughly 1,300 volunteers drawn from sixteen ethnic groups broke 185 kilometres of carriageway out of limestone using hammers, chisels and rope harnesses. They named it Đường Hạnh Phúc, the Happiness Road.

The terrain explains the effort. Dong Van Karst Plateau became Vietnam's first UNESCO Global Geopark in 2010 and covers some 2,350 square kilometres across four northern districts. What survives here is not only scenery. Ha Giang Province counts more than seventeen ethnic groups, and Hmong households make up the largest share, farming maize in soil pockets between limestone teeth.
