The road that made this circuit famous was cut by hand. Between 1959 and 1965, roughly 1,300 volunteers from sixteen ethnic groups chipped the Happiness Road out of the Ma Pi Leng cliff face using hammers, chisels and rope harnesses. Eleven months of that work covered a single kilometre.
